The South African Fulbright Foreign Student Program 2024 – 2025 is still accepting applications for fully-funded postgraduate studies in the US.
Closing date: 01 May 2023
For South African graduates of a university, the Fulbright Foreign Student Program offers grants to pursue postgraduate studies at a United States university in any subject (excluding MBAs and studies requiring contact with patients).
We select students through an application and interview process and provide a high level of support, including visa processing, health insurance, and pre-departure orientation.
The following opportunities are available:
- Non-degree Visiting Student Researcher: South African PhD students can apply to conduct one year of research at a U.S. institution as a Visiting Student Researcher (VSR). Applications are encouraged from current National Research Foundation (NRF) funded Ph.D. students.
- Graduate students may apply for scholarships toward their Master’s or Doctorate degrees. Two-year scholarships are awarded for one degree, either a Master’s or a Doctorate.
Eligibility

You must be a South African citizen or a permanent resident with a minimum of five years of permanent residency status in South Africa. Please note that S.A. nationals who have dual citizenship with the United States are not eligible.

Have one of the following academic degrees:
- Students must be registered for a PhD at a South African university at the time of application (May 1, 2023) and be registered at the time of the beginning of their U.S. research (August 2024).
- The following are required for a Master’s degree application: a 4-year Bachelor’s degree, a BTech degree, or a 3-year Bachelor’s degree with Honors
- A Master’s degree is required when applying for a Doctorate degree

- Academic excellence
- Evidence of leadership potential
- Clearly written study objectives
- Demonstrable interpersonal skill with evidence of cultural sensitivity and a genuine desire to learn more about the United States and share aspects of South African culture with American citizens
- Experience and interest in extracurricular and community activities
- Upon returning home, you wish to further the Fulbright Program and give back to your home country
- Graduate Record Exam (GRE) and Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) scores required
- Additionally, the Selection Committee and the Interview Panel will be looking for clear reasons for your choice of U.S. universities.
- To be considered for the Fulbright Program, candidates must conduct a thorough university search and identify institutions that fit their academic, personal, and professional goals.
