A Curtis Fellowship in 2023 supports South African youth ages 18-21 who embody the values of global citizenship through leadership development.
Curtis Fellowship for South African youth 2023
You must be a South African citizen between the ages of 18-21 (when you apply); you must also have limited past travel experience, and your household income must be less than R 12,000.
Curtis Fellowship Description
A strong emphasis is placed on attracting applicants from previously disadvantaged backgrounds.
An innovative and engaging curriculum will enhance the professional and personal development of Curtis Fellows.
Fellowships are followed by letters of recommendation, advice on career choices, and the opportunity to stay connected with other Curtis Fellows.
Curtis Fellows will study social issues and innovative international organizations with a focus on poverty alleviation in Global Citizen’s issue areas under the guidance of Global Citizen staff.
Students between the ages of 18 and 21 who are interested in becoming changemakers and ethical leaders are encouraged to join us.
Application requirements
In response to these questions, applicants must submit a video of 2-3 minutes or an essay of 500-700 words to [email protected]:

- How would you like the program to impact your life if selected?
- Is there a particular socioeconomic issue you are addressing and why?
If you are interested in receiving the Curtis Fellowship, you must submit a recommendation letter from your teacher/professor, school administrator, community leader, or colleague.

Program Highlights
- A curriculum that is innovative and engaging that focuses on professional and personal development from April-December
- Learn about cultural institutions, meet industry leaders, and more in late September in New York City (if travel permits).
- Various industry leaders will speak at the Speaker Series
- Internships and networking opportunities
- You will have access to a growing alumni network and many other benefits
- For part-time commitments between April and December 2023, there will be a monthly stipend included
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 21 (at the time of application)
- An inexperienced traveler
- Income below R120 000 for a family of four
- The application process is strongly encouraged for those from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
- It is necessary to have a valid passport
- A full-time resident of Gauteng is required
- Five days a week availability is required
- There is a requirement for physical attendance.
