As a general assistant I, you will be responsible for providing generalist support work to clients as well as moving furniture or equipment to the appropriate locations, thereby contributing to excellence in service delivery at the University of Johannesburg.
Responsibilities:
Daily Moving and Placement of furniture and accessories.
- It is necessary to make sure that the assessment venues are completed on time and that the furniture/equipment is in the appropriate location.
- Venues should be prepared according to the event organizer’s requirements
- Office and venue furniture stacking and redistribution.
- All four UJ campuses need furniture and equipment moved
- Identifying a designated area on campus for all redundant furniture and equipment.
- Equipment and furniture dismantling and assembly
- Timely closing of job cards is essential
- A maintenance schedule must be adhered to (toolboxes, etc. are kept in good condition).
Support work within cleaning general work & waste management
- Performing general work as directed by the line manager and disposing of waste and refuge as needed. Within Campus Facilities Management, assist peers with driving upon request. If necessary, pick up the cleaners from outside the houses.
- Moving stock at stores (assisting with inventory)
- Assuring that the storeroom is stacked and set up according to the manager’s instructions
Compliance & Health and Safety   Â
- Knowledge and understanding of University Health & Safety policies, and emergency fire procedures.
- If any equipment, appliances, or potential hazards are damaged or faulty, let us know.
- Incorporate safe working practices inside and outside of the university.
- Protect yourself by wearing a uniform or protective clothing.
- To ensure all equipment, machinery and buildings are secure.
Professional DevelopmentÂ
- As part of the employee’s personal development plan, the employee is required to attend recommended training.
- The UJ Performance Management System must be trained by you
- It is important to be familiar with the policies and procedures of UJ.

Minimum requirements
- A high school diploma or vocational certificate (Level 3 on the NQF)
- One year of job-related experience
- Driver’s license
Recommendations:
- Knowledge of basic moving furniture and equipment.
- Professional driver’s permit (PDP)
Competencies and Behavioral Attributes:
- High responsiveness to moving.
- The ability to work independently and under pressure physically.
- Having a good understanding of instructions.
- In the service field, you should be respectful when interacting with clients/customers.
- Good communication skills.
- Must be reliable and punctual.
- The ability to read and write at a basic level is required
- Must be customer focused
