Plant Educators serve as a key link between BMW and NUMSA national and regional education teams.
In this position, you will be part of the national team of Plant Educators within OEMs and will be working very closely with the Shopstewards Committee.
The incumbent is responsible to:
- Work within the mandate and scope of the BMW Training Department and the BMW Union.
- Become familiar with the company’s policies and procedures.
- Coordination, development, and delivery of NUMSA and Company agreed with education and training programs.
Education Development – contributes to the development and strategic direction of NUMSA’s membership-based workplace education programs by providing innovative ideas for annual program planning.
Programme Administration – supports the effective operation of education and training programs
As part of these tasks, participants may arrange practical arrangements for workshops, such as locating suitable and affordable venues, coordinating external facilitators if necessary, mobilizing participants on time, coordinating materials, maintaining registers, reporting on workshops and maintaining records or files related to education.
Membership Education – Coordinates programs, workshops, indabas, and courses as agreed with the company and as mandated by NUMSA for membership and workers.
These have the express aim of building NUMSA’s shop floor capacity. These may also include ad-hoc education interventions determined by need and as per agreed frequency with the Company.
Management of education programs including;
- Keeping up with relevant readings, reports, legislation, policies, procedures, critiques, and discussions.
- Â Building strategic relationships between the various parties involved.
- Produce educational materials, develop/adapt them, and design them.
- Developing, preparing, and facilitating relevant meetings and workshops.
- Mentoring and coaching members on programs as needed.
- Implementing educational and training interventions using the available resources.
- Implementing recording and reporting programs as well as developing appropriate approaches.
The programs will include but not be limited to:
- Assist in the coordination of the WSP and ATR.
- Assist with monthly reporting on legislative and business-specific requirements, including zonal meetings.
- An understanding of company policies, procedures, and collective agreements
- New Associates induction.
- Understanding of NUMSA constitution, policies and resolutions.
- Educate associates about the role and responsibilities of the trade union and shop stewards.
On Workplace Skills Planning
As a Plant Educator, the Plant Educator interacts with the shop stewards who represent the Union at the Skills Development and Employment Equity committees regarding employment equity issues and training and development.
Providing support to the Shop Stewards with regard to WSP and ATR, including
- identifying training and development gaps.
- All matters related to worker training and equity should be communicated with Talent Management.
- Providing assistance with the planning and implementation of new education and training programs.
- By networking with OEMs and union education structures, you can build good relationships/partnerships.

In this regard, institutions of higher learning in the region may be able to offer relevant programs.
Qualification:
Educational Background / Professional Knowledge and Experience / Other Skills
- Grade 12 National Certificate/Matric
- It will be advantageous if you have a relevant tertiary qualification
- Worker education and facilitation skills.
- Workplace policies and labor laws are familiar to you.
- An intimate knowledge and understanding of Union structures are required.
- Have experience delivering education and training and possess educator skills.
- Skills in coordination and administration would be advantageous.
- An understanding of NUMSA’s constitution, policies, and resolutions.
- Understanding of the requirements of the National Bargaining Forum.
